We crossed the river to St Pauls Cathedral where we encountered people protesting the economic troubles. Those who know me will understand that my sketches of people tend to be somewhat whimsical. Despite that, I appreciate the serious nature of the protester's grievances. Two weeks after these drawings were made they are still camped out in front of the cathedral. The city and the cathedral management have called for them to move on.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_151011.1.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_151011.1.thmb.jpg" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_151011.2.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_151011.2.thmb.jpg" /></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-43438534291507981252011-10-17T16:34:00.001-07:002011-10-17T16:34:50.965-07:00Sketching trip to London Zoo<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_170911.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_170911.thmb.jpg" /></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-73309241926191662192011-08-04T02:00:00.001-07:002011-08-04T02:00:33.754-07:00Here are my efforts from the last few <a href="http://www.sketchcrawl.com/">Sketchcrawls</a>:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_022710.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_022710.thmb.jpg" /></a><br />Sketchcrawl 26<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_310710.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_310710.thmb.jpg" /></a><br />Sketchcrawl 28<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_220111.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_220111.thmb.jpg" /></a><br />Sketchcrawl 30<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_160411.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_160411.thmb.jpg" /></a><br />Sketchcrawl 31<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_230711.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_230711.thmb.jpg" /></a><br />Sketchcrawl 32Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-69516625402681048362010-09-05T06:19:00.000-07:002010-09-05T06:25:28.750-07:00Landscape studies in oil9x12 inch studies. Starting to move away from experimental use of colour to something that is more representational.<br /><br />A large part of the fun of this is when people come up and want to see what I am painting. I used to want privacy, but now I actually enjoy it. They are always complimentary, which is not necessarily a reflection on whatever skills I might have. Most people regard any level of painting ability as a sort of magic trick. One guy who was clearly down on his luck walked up to me at Liverpool Street Station and told me how impressed he was with the painting, then asked if I could spare some change. He found my one weakness. How could I refuse.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_130509.1.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_130509.1.thmb.jpg"></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_130509.2.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_130509.2.thmb.jpg"></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-85407430277530393342009-04-24T11:34:00.000-07:002009-04-24T11:36:17.325-07:00Colour StudiesBack to doing some colour studies. I find it remarkable that once you calibrate your colour sense to the world of the painting some remarkable things happen. What looks like grey on the palette can stand in for green in the world of the painting, for instance.Pink can become white, rust can become scarlet, olive can become black. This shift in calibration can force the viewer to respond emotionally to the painting in different ways.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_170409.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_170409.thmb.jpg"></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_123108.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_123108.thmb.jpg"></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-39993608931225700952008-11-03T08:19:00.001-08:002008-11-03T08:24:28.123-08:00Another Sketchcrawl in LondonIt was Sketchcrawl day again. Each is in gouache on heavy weight paper, about 1.25 inches in height. There is no need, I've found, to create a large painting in order to explore colour and composition. When scanned at 300dpi a lot of interesting accidental details seem to pop out.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_270808.1.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_270808.1.thmb.jpg" width=340px></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-23764071832405247642008-04-11T10:05:00.000-07:002008-04-11T10:16:15.666-07:00Things I might have seen in London, part 10In colour with a "u", here are some gouache studies which I have been working on over the past couple of weeks. It's a challenge to work in the rain and snow sometimes. Look closely and you can see some rain spots. I learned a very important lesson in the course of working on these: zinc white sucks. I bought a cheap Windsor and Newton gouache set which came with zinc white. This pigment has the unfortunate property of absorbing colour from pigments that are applied on top of it. The solution: use permanent white instead. Permanent white uses titanium dioxide as a pigment base. It's superb, very opaque, and layers quite well.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_060408.1.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_060408.1.thmb.jpg" width=340px></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-6137221172607544652008-04-03T05:16:00.000-07:002008-04-15T01:56:10.535-07:00Sketchcrawl #18The eighteenth International Sketchcrawl (<a href="http://www.sketchcrawl.com">www.sketchcrawl.com</a>) was last Saturday. I'm happy to report that attendance was up by 50%! Yes, this time there were three of us.<br /><br />Thanks to Chris and Alfonso who showed up. It was a full day of sketching, and as usual I felt that I walked too much and drew too little. The fact is that every location has something to offer, if you are open to it. There are a number of ways to use grids. In this case, I drew a grid in light pencil on a sketchbook page. I then made it a goal to fill that grid with tonal studies by the end of the day as I wandered around. The fact that each composition was a fixed rectangle helped to eliminate another decision from the process. Restrictions like this make it easier for me to focus my efforts.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_200907.1.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_200907.1.thmb.jpg"></a><br /><br />There are other ways to use grids. Thumbnail sketches work really well in a grid format. Here's a "bus sketching" session:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_200907.2.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_200907.2.jpg" width=340></a><br /><br />When sketching from the imagination rather than from life, using a closely spaced grid can stimulate creative thinking. Allowing lines from one grid box to flow into the next permits an uninterrupted flow of ideas. Not all of these thumbnails will be useful, but in this approach quantity comes first. Discerning the best image becomes a process of elimination.Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-18638321055274774782007-09-23T10:21:00.000-07:002007-09-23T10:25:52.791-07:00Things I might have seen in London, part 6Floppycabs. Once or twice a year, a little group of sketch fanatics gets together in various cities around the globe and goes out for a "sketchcrawl". After they are done, they post the results to the forums at www.sketchcrawl.com. Only one other dude joined the London sketchcrawl, but no matter. Here are the results of my efforts:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.A.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.A.thmb.jpg"></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.B.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.B.thmb.jpg"></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.C.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.C.thmb.jpg"></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.D.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_250807.D.thmb.jpg"></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-32759057739668634532007-08-24T11:14:00.000-07:002007-08-24T11:26:56.345-07:00Things I might have seen in London, part 3There is a fascinating little place in London called Neal's Yard. It's a tiny courtyard of shops and cafes formed by the back sides of the tall, old buildings which line three streets. The real joy of the place is in the discovery. It's so wonderful to wander down some narrow alley and and emerge into a hidden courtyard with careening balconies, overflowing flowerboxes, and the smell of baked goods. The drawing on the right was inspired by that location, but only in a very general way. The other two were drawn in locations around Kensington and Knightsbridge.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_240807.A.jpg" target="_new"><img src="http://www.tomdow.com/media2/sketchbook_240807.A.thmb.jpg"></a>Tom Dowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06413095477926822432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260707552290318254.post-64987972549178588182007-08-15T12:12:00.000-07:002007-08-17T11:17:23.980-07:00Things I might have seen in London, part 2Views from around the city.
